Apparel products that are considered “green” contain recycled material or are organically grown and sustainable. Some of the manufacturing materials in apparel that are considered “Green” are: Bamboo: Bamboo is a quick-growing renewable source, possesses anti-microbial and water-wicking properties and is UV resistant. It is hypoallergenic and antimicrobial. Environmentally, bamboo can be grown without pesticides; regenerates on its own and can grow up to 40 inches in one day. Bamboo material feels like a cross between cashmere and silk. Corn: Ingeo ™ fiber is made from U.S. grown corn, produced in Blair, Nebraska. Made from 100% renewable resources, it requires 68% less energy to produce Ingeo fiber than other synthetics such as polyester or nylon, which are petroleum based. Ingeo does not use any petroleum in its production, and does not contain herbicides, insecticides or fertilizer. It is antibacterial, anti-pilling, breathable, wrinkle free, stain and UV resistant and is soft and comfortable! Fabric made from corn feels similar to cotton. Organic cotton: Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, and build biologically diverse agriculture. Apparel companies are developing programs that either use 100 percent organically grown cotton, or blend small percentages of organic cotton with conventional cotton in their products. Organic cotton feels similar to standard cotton. “Non-woven” materials: Polypropylene is often referred to as “non-woven” material, and is made from recycled pop bottles and plastics. It is a durable material and is frequently found manufactured as tote bags, aprons and lighter-weight fabric goods. Modal: Modal is a bio-based fiber from the cellulose of Beech trees. It is 50% more water-absorbent than cotton, and is odor resistant. It is essentially a variety or rayon. Textiles made from Modal do not pill and are resistant to shrinkage and fading. Modol fabric feels similar to silk or cashmere. Hemp: Hemp is made from the stems of hemp plants and is a quick-growing renewable resource. It softens with each washing and is three times stronger than cotton. Antimicrobial and UV resistant, hemp fabric feels and looks similar to linen.
